Concordia of Bella Vista Honors Residents Sylvia Lee, Lorene Louk and Lou Larson on National Centenarian’s Day

BELLA VISTA, Ark. (Sept. 23, 2019) - Concordia of Bella Vista celebrates a trio of residents who are 100 years old and older on National Centenarian’s Day 2019: Lorene Louk and Lou Larson, both 100, and Sylvia Lee, 101.

National Centenarian’s Day is observed annually on September 22 to recognize and honor those who are 100 years of age or older. The day was originally proclaimed as an opportunity to listen to their life stories and learn from their wisdom.

Lee, born Sept. 2,1918, has been part of the Concordia of Bella Vista community since 2000. Louk, born on Feb. 1, 1919, and Larson, born on March 7 that same year, came to Concordia of Bella Vista in 2010 and 2014, respectively.

Lee believes having “a good attitude” is the secret to life, and she says exercise, honey and smiles keep her feeling young.

In fact, eating a good breakfast and exercising are the best parts of her day, Lee says.

She considers her parents as the greatest influence on her life. Lee looks back at the 1940s as the best time of her life --- she was married and had just started raising a family.

Louk says she keeps young by playing cards, taking walks and visiting friends.

Her advice for the younger generations? Do everything in moderation!

Louk says her parents were the greatest influence in her life, expressing admiration for how they handled adversity, including the loss of their home when she was 17 years old.

“All we had were the pajamas we were wearing at the time,” Louk says.

Other troubles would soon follow. Louk lost a cousin to typhoid fever the next year. A year later, after the family had rebuilt their home, someone stole all their grain.

She recalls the 1980s with particular fondness. Her husband, George, had retired and they traveled together. Her favorite places to visit were Germany and Ireland.

Larson believes it’s what’s on the inside that counts when it comes to living a long life.

“Live every day striving to have a good heart,” he says.

The secret to keeping himself young? Just four vitamins a day, which Larson has been doing faithfully for the last 20 years.

Larson considers the years he worked to improve himself in trade school in the 1930s as some of the best times of his life. Jobs were scarce during the Depression and he felt fortunate to have that opportunity, which opened the door to a 41-year career with IBM in Chicago.

However, Larson says his proudest moment is when he and his wife, Gladys, welcomed their daughter, Sue, to the world in 1953.

Larson takes the wide view when looking at what makes the best part of his day at 100 years of age.

“How can you pinpoint just one thing?” he asks.

“We are fortunate to have these three special residents with us at Concordia and we want to honor Mrs. Lee, Mrs. Louk and Mr. Larson this Centenarians’ Day,” says Angie Clark, executive director of Concordia of Bella Vista.
